A 52-year-old man with advanced metastatic melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer, had a complete remission after being infused with billions of clones of his own CD4+ T tumor killer cells that had been cultured outside his body and "programmed" to attack a specific type of melanoma cancer cell. Experts are cautiously optimistic that breakthroughs like this are bringing us closer to the day when we regard cancer like diabetes, not curable, but controllable.
Overcoming resistance to a cancer drug Drugs that target members of the EGFR family of proteins have proven effective for the treatment of certain types of cancer, including breast cancer. However, in a large number of patients for whom the treatment initially works well, the tumor recurs and is resistant to the effects of the drug.
The immune system of vertebrate animals consists of two components: the innate immune response, a constitutive system ready to respond to a pathogen, and the adaptive immune response, a system of immunological memory that responds to previously encountered pathogens. In a study led by Dr.

An article in the open-access journal PLOS ComputationalBiology discusses how statistical modeling can aidresearchers in determining a person's individual immune systemproteins. This will help to assess a patient's disease fighting abilityor the likelihood that the immune system will attack the body's owntissues. Although manyareas of research and medicine rely critically upon thisknowledge, obtaining this information is usually costly anddifficult.
The Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommended yesterday that flu shots be administered annually to children six months through 18 years of age. ACIP, functioning under the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) umbrella, has been criticized for years by parents of vaccine-injured children for neglecting vaccine safety considerations in favor of keeping vaccination rates high.
"We have identified a key connection of signaling pathways in the cascade of events leading to sepsis. This defines a crucial point where the immune system spirals out of control to cause severe sepsis and where there is an opportunity for therapeutic intervention," says Scripps Research Professor Wolfram Ruf, who led the research with his postdoctoral fellow Frank Niessen. Their results are published in the February 27 advance, online issue of Nature.
Researchers at The Scripps Research Institute have developed a new two-punch strategy against HIV and they have already successfully tested aspects of it in the laboratory.Their study, which appears this week in the online Early Edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), may re-energize attempts to create a preventive/therapeutic vaccine against HIV, say the authors.
It was announced that the U.S. Court of Federal Claims and the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program ruled in favor of a child who regressed into autism as a result of vaccinations, several of which contained the mercury-based preservative thimerosal.
